PhD Programme in English

First year

The following are eligible to apply for the first year of study taught in english:

  • candidates who are foreign nationals in the Republic of Croatia;
  • candidates who have graduated from a medical school or other faculty dealing with the scientific field of biomedicine and health sciences or a related field;
  • candidates with a grade point average in undergraduate study of at least 3.51 (in the 1-5 grading system) or at least 8.00 (on the A-D scale);
  • candidates who have conducted the academic recognition of a foreign degree of higher education, i.e. the recognition of study duration at the University of Zagreb.

Second year

In order to be admitted to the second year of the PhD programme, PhD candidates have to:

  • submit their application for project/thesis proposal
  • have the proof of attendance of the obligatory and elected courses from the first year

Third year

In order to be admitted to the third year of the PhD programme, PhD candidates have to:

  • have their application for project/thesis proposal accepted by the Faculy Board of the School of Medicine and the Senate of the University of Zagreb
  • have the proof of attendance of the obligatory and elected courses from the second year

Differential year

The following are eligible to apply for the differential year of study taught in english:

  • candidates who are foreign nationals in the Republic of Croatia;
  • candidates who have completed the first year of a university specialist (professional) postgraduate study in the areas of biomedicine and health sciences or those who have attended and passed contents at a 1st category course of continuing medical education organized by the University of Zagreb, School of Medicine which are comparable, both in volume and quality, to a completed year of a professional specialist postgraduate course at the School of Medicine, i.e. contents providing the student with at least 10.5 ECTS credits;
  • candidates who have completed at least the 1st (first) year of a PhD programme at another university or other postgraduate 1st category course of continuing medical education may also apply for the differential year upon the evaluation of the PhD Board of the School of Medicine; all candidates should previously complete a graduate study in the field of biomedicine and health sciences. By way of exception, with an argumentation and application, candidates with a degree in other fields of natural sciences, and, in the case of public health, human sciences as well, may be admitted;
  • candidates with a grade point average in the undergraduate study below 3.51 may apply if they have additional credits derived from the results of their scientific activity according to the regulations set by the Medical School. Grade point average below 3.51 causes credits to be deducted in a way that each decimal point accounts for 1 credit. Candidates with negative points cannot enroll in the programme.

Criteria

Criteria for determining the order of precedence:

Grade point average in the undergraduate study (grade point average enclosed)
– for each decimal point between 3.5 – 4.0 fill in 2 points; for each decimal above 4,0 fill in 3 points

Graduate thesis (enclose the certificate of the research graduate thesis defended)
– for research graduate thesis defended fill in 2,5 points

Professional and scientific activity:
a) Master thesis (enclose a copy of the Master’s diploma or certificate of defended Master thesis)
– for profesional Master thesis fill in 10 points, for Master of Science 20 points

b) Articles indexed in CC (enclosed: list of publications, copies of publications and evidence that the journal is indexed)
– for first authorship, fill in 20 points for each article, for co-authorship 15 points each

c) Articles indexed in other international indices (enclosed: list of publications, copies of publications and evidence that the journal is indexed)
– for first authorship, fill in 15 points for each article, for co-authorship 10 points each

d) Articles in a peer-reviewed journals, books or collected papers (enclosed: list of publications, copies of publications1 and covers of books or collected papers which indicate that the paper has been peer-reviewed)
– for first authorship, fill in 10 points for each article, for co-authorship 5 points each

e) Active participation in international scientific conferences (points awarded for active participation per conference –oral or poster presentation with published abstract; enclosed: list of abstracts, copies of abstracts and covers of conference proceedings, i.e. conference programmes which indicate that the conference has been organised by an international or European association (institution) or by at least three countries)
– for active participation as first author fill in 6 points per conference, as co-author 3 points; points are awarded per conference, not per abstract

f) Active participation in domestic scientific conferences (points awarded for active participation per conference –oral or poster presentation with published abstract;; enclosed: list of abstracts, copies of abstracts and covers of conference proceedings)
– for active participation as first author fill in 4 points per conference, as co-author 2 points; points are awarded per conference, not per abstract

FOR ENROLMENT IN PhD PROGRAMME BIOMEDICINE AND HEALTH SCIENCES
LEADING TO THE ACADEMIC TITLE OF PhD
in the academic year 2020/2021

PhD PROGRAMME “BIOMEDICINE AND HEALTH SCIENCES”

Application to the first year of the PhD programme taught in English with the start of classes determined subsequently. Up to a maximum of 10 students are admitted, minimum 3 students.
The following are ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR THE FIRST YEAR OF STUDY TAUGHT IN ENGLISH:

  • candidates who are foreign nationals in the Republic of Croatia;
  • candidates who have graduated from a medical school or other faculty dealing with the scientific field of biomedicine and health sciences or a related field;
  • candidates with a grade point average in undergraduate study of at least 3.51 (in the 1-5 grading system) or at least 8.00 (on the 5-10 or A-F scale);
  • candidates who have conducted the academic recognition of a foreign degree of higher education, i.e. the recognition of study duration at the University of Zagreb.

Documents needed for the application:

  1. Application forms (see below),
  2. Verified copy of diploma (with the supplement, if issued),
  3. Verified transcript of records,
  4. Letter of recommendation by a potential mentor (see below),
  5. Research topic proposal (see below),
  6. Statement on the model of studying (see below),
  7. Curriculum vitae (Europass form, below) with the photo,
  8. Copy of passport,
  9. English language certificate.

All documents should be submitted in English (or Croatian) as originals, or copies and translations certified by the University or legally appointed English translator, or legally appointed notary. Candidates have to go through a procedure of the academic recognition of a foreign degree of higher education at the University of Zagreb. Positive academic recognition is obligatory before the enrolment in the Programme. At enrollment, students have to have a residence permit in the Republic of Croatia and regulated health insurance policy within the Croatian healthcare system.

OTHER CONDITIONS

  1. Before admission, the School of Medicine will organize an interview with candidates.
  2. The date of the interview and enrollment of candidates into the PhD programme taught in English shall be determined subsequently.
  3. Applications are to be sent on prescribed forms available at the PhD programme’s web site. Incomplete applications or those not complying with the instructions shall not be taken into consideration.
  4. It is recommended to enclose copies of papers and congress abstracts along with the confirmation that the congress is subject to peer review.
  5. It is recommended to enclose other evidence guaranteeing the success of the compilation of the PhD thesis.

TUITION FEE – 20,000.00 kn per academic year (two semesters) plus 5,000.00 kn for administrative expenses. The tuition fee is to be paid in full prior to enrollment.
